After studying Visual Arts at Goldsmiths College (Londres) and Sciences at Oslo University (Norway), Jana Winderen has gradually become interested in sound art. Artist, curator and producer, she regularly presents her work in festivals, exhibitions, performances, residencies and specialized workshops. Her work has been presented at Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary in Istanbul (Turkey, 2010), the TodaysArt Festival in The Hague (Netherlands, 2009), the ISCM World New Music Days and the Götenberg Botanical Garden (Sweden, 2009), JunKroom in Kyoto (Japan, 2009) and Sleppet (Norway, 2007). She has created several sound recordings for cassettes, vinyl and downloadable digital files, presented under the labels Touch and Ash International

The multichannel sound installation by Jana Winderen builds upon the material from the eponymous album, released by Touch in April 2010. The installation consists of recordings made by four DPA hydrophones, a Telinga parabolic reflector and 4060 DPAs from inside and deep under the ice in Greenland, the Barents Sea, of hunting saithe in the deep Norwegian fjords, and the shifting current deep under the surface. Through blind sound recording, the artist creates auditory experiences that would be difficult – if not impossible – to achieve without this equipment. The audio topography of the oceans and the depth of ice crevasses are thus brought to the surface. Her work reveals the complexity and strangeness of the oceanic sound universe, an area often overlooked by the scientific community.
