Originally from Brussels where he currently lives, Pierre Clemens is presenting his work in Montreal for the first time. In the small room of Galerie B-312, he presents a series of recent drawings. For the past few years, his work has been characterized by the development of simple motifs, sometimes evoking the landscape or suggesting some geological configuration. Strictly speaking, landscape is neither shown nor represented. And the way in which he cuts them up leads us to believe that they are more fragments of larger entities. The black-and-white work he develops, subtly, sets up a play of lights and shadows that, in relation to the forms he circumscribes, suggests the spatiality of the landscape. The relationship between the drawn parts and the voids that surround them creates an effect of strangeness due, among other things, to the different treatment of space. While in the drawn surfaces a work shaded in grey suggests volume, the surrounding white contrasts, even opposes this spatiality by reaffirming the plan. The result is a floating effect and a double play of light that gives these drawings a mysterious dimension.
