GWEN MACGREGOR and SANDRA RECHICO
Maps in Doubt
A meeting between two artists caused by Dan Adler
Maps in Doubt is the result of a collaboration between two artists, Gwen MacGregor and Sandra Rechico, provoked by Dan Adler, independent curator, who was interested in the crossings and gaps of their respective practices. A first version of Maps in Doubt was presented at Mercer Union (Toronto) in 2008.
Gwen MacGregor’s multidisciplinary practice includes sculpture, photography and video. Her work has been presented across Canada (including Montréal, Toronto, Oakville, Lethbridge, Winnipeg), Mexico, France, England, Germany, Italy and the United States. Her videos have been shown in many festivals and events around the world.
Through a practice of drawing, Sandra Rechico creates in situ works and installations, often ephemeral. Her work has been presented across Canada and abroad. She has participated in many international residencies. She was co-curator of wade, an art event presented in 2006 across the city of Toronto. She is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph, Ontario.
—Opening Friday, November 20, 2009 AT 5 PM
The exhibition Maps in Doubt by Gwen MacGregor and Sandra Rechico is a recording and mapping project of their movements in the cities of Münster, Kassel, Montréal and Toronto. The works are the result of a superposition or a juxtaposition of the data collected during their path in these four cities, creating a new cartography that suggests intersubjective space and challenges our understanding of our urban spaces.
