DOUTES ET REDOUTES

Accumulation and repetition are probably due to some secret motives. But among these, we could probably mention obsession. As if a question, an image or a word were constantly coming to our mind without being able to drive it out. The activity that Éric Ilhareguy engages in is perhaps to welcome this obsession and to bring out its densities, clusters and eventual landscape. Through repetition, superimposition and the use of different scales, a complex space develops.
The repeated motifs that the artist uses are articulated around a few words that are written abundantly, plethorically, even excessively. And these words he uses refer to the question of identity but are rooted in falsity. This idea of a truth of the subject that would reside in its authenticity and that would manifest itself through artistic practice is evoked here in a way that is both obsessive and distant.
But the language that serves as his material allows us another reading: how can we not hear a sum of sounds or some infernal noise that would be produced by the utterance of these words or fragments of words? From these drawings, a kind of musicality would then emerge, a crackling or rustle that complements the writing.
