Cristina Figueroa Vives (La Habana, 1983) holds a Master’s degree in Art History from University of Havana, in Art and New Media Curatorial from Escola Superior de Disenny (ESDi) and the Ramón Llull University of Barcelona. Curator at the Casa de las Américas since 2006, she has realized many projects such as Año Cinético (2009) and Optico’70. She has written multiple essays, notably on the Cuban graphic arts (2009), on Korda's famous photographic work (2011), as well as Pioneers of Digital Art, for which she won the Curatorship Award’s National Mention from the Conseil National des Arts Plastiques. She has collaborated on various publications such as La Gaceta de Cuba (UNEAC), Arte Cubano (CNAP), Nouvelles Arte Cubano (CNAP) and Arte por excelencias (Grupo Excelencias, Madrid).
She has also done a number of independent curatorial projects, more notably she was invited to the 6th edition of the Contemporary Cuban Art Salon at the Centro de Desarollo de las Artes Visuales. Since 2014, she has realized several Cuban contemporary art exhibitions through the Estudio Figueroa-Vives, in partnership with the Norwegian embassy. She has given courses and delivered conferences on photography, contemporary arts and new media at La Casa de las Americas, the faculty of art and literature of the University of Havana, the Institut Supérieur d’art (ISA), as well the International Congress of Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in New York and in Barcelone. She is currently member of the Association internationale des critiques d’art (AICA) in Paris and the Union nationale des écrivains et artistes of Cuba (UNEAC)..
As part of the Montréal ~ Habana exchange, organized by the RCAAQ since 2011 in partnership with the Conseil des arts de Montreal, Galerie B-312 is pleased to welcome Cristina Figueroa Vives, New Media curator. She is invited by the RCAAQ to complete a training residency as a curator in Montreal. A partnership has been established this year with the Centro de Desarollo de las Artes Visuales in Havana and OBORO in Montreal. This meeting will focus on the issues of the contemporary art world in Cuba as well as Vives’s curatorial practice in new media.
Montréal ~ Habana exchange allows artists and curators to immerse themselves in a new creative-thinking environment and to engage in activities that combine visual and media arts, in order to encourage partnerships and long-term projects. This project also aims to promote access to expertise and investigate new artistic territories, in both Cuba and Montreal.
