Entre-là

—OPENING FRIDAY JANUARY 11, 2008 AT 7 PM Galerie B-312 is pleased to host in its large room Entre-là, a selection of the most recent paintings by Angèle Verret.-For the little we know of how this artist works, we know that she does not paint. She lets the material do their work, once, twice, a thousand times, until the result is realized. Here, the surface was worked on flat. Acrylic layers were applied to the airbrush successively, one layer per desired colour and no drying time between applications. The artist thus obtains sensitive surfaces where the slightest contact produces patterns, which must be controlled, without, however, being able to control the final result; the physics of fluids doing its work, the gravity and the drying time too. The painting will never be finished until the image definitively fixes the plastic proposal that the artist wishes to share with us. Meanwhile, it can be washed with water, wiped while it is not quite dry, it can be dyed or subjected to successive applications of acrylic.- Once completed, the paintings are absolutely smooth. We will see traces here and there; reliefs, fold-marks in the material, yet not the material itself. We will sometimes recognize successive planes, transparencies, depth, luminosity drawing a landscape, a texture, an aquatic background, but without recognizing the artist’s desire to represent such subjects. They appeared, and the artist retained and accumulated them, through always after being surprised by them first.-A subtle dialogue is established between the simplicity of seeing and the will to identify, looking at these paintings, we observe an inexorable drama: seeing remains hidden behind what is perceived, in what is identifiable. -The paintings of Angele Verret unveil this drama to formulate the visible and its flesh, in painting, the sensation of seeing.
