Michel Boulanger
ARTIST STATEMENT
Michel Boulanger’s work focuses on landscape transformation through the deployment of technologies, particularly in industrial agriculture. Breaking with stereotypical representations of the rural world, his works underline the strangeness of landscapes marked by increasing industrialization. In Michel Boulanger’s work, drawing constitutes the central point of a multidisciplinary approach which, while remaining very attached to hand work, integrates digital technologies and extends the drawn image in space, object and time.
Michel Boulanger, born in Montmagny (Quebec) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Montreal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (1984) and a master’s degree in visual arts from Université du Québec à Montréal (1992). Michel Boulanger has participated in numerous exhibitions in Canada and abroad, notably in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the United States and Mexico. In 2004, his work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. His works belong to numerous public and private collections. He has been represented by Christiane Chassay, Art Mûr and Joyce Yahouda galleries. He has also participated in the Politique d’intégration des arts à l’architecture et à l’environnement. As a founding member of Galerie B-312, he was also a professor at the École des arts visuels et médiatiques of Université du Québec à Montréal from 2001 to 2020, where he set up the Grupmuv, a research and creation laboratory in drawing and moving images, with Gisèle Trudel and Thomas Corriveau.
