François Lacasse

ARTIST STATEMENT
Since 1992, François Lacasse has been elaborating a research that initially has focused on questions related to image problem, essentially dealing with its withdrawal and its reading modalities. This work sought to maintain in tension the relationship that links the visible and the readable. Whether the work involved fragmentation or superimposition on existing images, the loss of legibility was intimately linked to vision as an activity. At the turn of the 2000s, this work focused more on the exploration of the physical qualities of materials and an interest for color then occupy a preponderant place in it. The different colored liquid consistency as well as the application processes played a determining role. The painting was organized from a series of gestures and effects of gravity on different qualities of fluids.—Around 2010, the use of oil paint allowed the development of new applying color processes. The resulting work explored more the various possibilities offered by imprinting process. The work protocol developments where some parameters were determined in advance also played an important role.—Since 2014, a return to acrylic paint has been carried out, favoring the process of flowing liquids of different consistency. Compared to the previous work in oil, where control and precision parts of the drawing were quite important, the recent work gives more importance to chance, to various reactions between liquids and pigments and to use of phenomena arising from material qualities of the medium. In that sense, these paintings are a poetic manifestation of what fluid mechanics teaches us.
