Jean-Pierre Gauthier has been present in the contemporary art scene since the mid-1990s. He pursues a hybrid approach integrating visual arts, sound and kinetic art. His installations have been showcased across Canada, the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. A prominent figure in Canadian media arts, his work has been shown at several digital arts events, including Transmediale (Berlin, 2006), Electrohype (Lund, 2006), Tonspur (Vienna, 2010), FILE (Sao Paulo, 2012) International Triennial of New Media Art (Beijing, 2014). In 2011, Village Voice considered its exhibition at the Jack Shainman Gallery as one of the top ten of the year in New York. Winner of the Sobey Prize in 2004, he is also a recipient of the 2006 Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award and the 2012 Louis Comtois Award. The artist is represented by the Jack Shainman Gallery (New York).

September 5 to October 4 2014 Residency August 2014 Performance and Launch Saturday October 4 at 5:30PM Opening Friday September 5 at 5:30 pmThroughout the month of August, Galerie B-312 welcomes Jean-Pierre Gauthier in residence. This period of work allowed the artist to create an immersive sound installation entitled L’orchestre à géométrie variable and composed more than a dozen new pieces in situ. The artist has been working on an orchestral system for the past years, the first of which was exhibited in st. Hyacinthe. As the title indicates this work employs a set of variable geometries. Galerie B-312 presents this orchestra that includes over twenty compositions by now. L’orchestre à géométrie variable reveals the increasingly important status the artist places on the mechanization of sound wave emission devices. If his works were first recognized for their kinetic and narrative qualities, especially due to their reference to the working world, today, it is interesting to observe an abstraction of the interactivity between the work and the visitor, an evacuation of narrativity in favour of musicality, as well as an increased importance given to the production.
